The victims were transported to a hospital, where the woman was declared dead. The children remained in critical condition early Sunday morning.

The Longueuil fire department called in the police.

Longueuil police spokesperson François Boucher said a man who is considered an important witness was stopped on the scene and is meeting with investigators.

The fire did not result in the entire tower being evacuated. Its damage was limited to the apartment in question.

The Longueuil police investigation, which seeks to shed light on the circumstances around this incident, is ongoing.

Anyone with information can get in touch via the Info-Azimut information line or at 450 646-8500, Boucher said, noting that information can be provided anonymously.

A police command centre was established on the scene Sunday morning.
