Belgian King Appoints New Mediator to Revive Stalled Coalition Talks
King Philippe of Belgium has tasked Maxime Prevot with mediating deadlocked coalition negotiations. The move comes after previous talks led by Bart De Wever failed due to disagreements over economic reforms.
In a recent development in Belgium's political landscape, King Philippe has appointed Maxime Prevot, leader of the Francophone centrist party Les Engagés, to mediate coalition talks. This decision comes after negotiations reached an impasse over social-economic reforms, particularly regarding a proposed capital gains tax.
The previous mediator, Bart De Wever of the Flemish nationalist N-VA party, resigned on August 24, 2023, following a deadlock in discussions. De Wever had been attempting to form a government coalition known as the "Arizona coalition," named for the similarity of party colors to the Arizona state flag. This proposed alliance included N-VA, Les Engagés, MR (Reformist Movement), CD&V (Christian Democratic and Flemish), and Vooruit (Flemish socialist party).
Prevot's appointment is significant, despite his party's eighth-place finish in the June 2023 elections. Belgian media has described him as a strong supporter of the Arizona coalition and as having positive relationships with all party leaders. The palace has emphasized the urgency of resuming negotiations, requesting Prevot to report back by September 2, 2023, giving him a 10-day window to reconcile differences among the parties.

It's worth noting that Belgium has a history of prolonged government formations. The country holds the world record for the longest period without a formal government, lasting 541 days in 2010-2011.
