Jake Sullivan, the U.S. National Security Advisor, announced that Washington is preparing a "substantial" support package for Ukraine. This aid aims to bolster Ukraine's capabilities and prevent significant Russian advancements in the eastern region. The package is expected to be finalized by the end of September 2023, approximately one year ago.
Of particular concern is the situation around Pokrovsk, a city in Donetsk Oblast with a pre-war population of about 60,000. Russian forces have been making progress in this area, which serves as a crucial transport hub. The potential capture of Pokrovsk could provide Moscow with new offensive opportunities and complicate Ukrainian logistics.
Zelenskiy intends to present what he terms a "victory plan" to Biden and potential successors. This plan is expected to outline a comprehensive strategy for ending the conflict through diplomatic means. "I do think we need a comprehensive strategy for success in this war and that is what President Zelenskiy says he is bringing, so we are very much looking forward to sitting down and talking that through and President Biden is eager for that conversation."
The meeting will also address Ukraine's request for long-range weapons to counter increased Russian missile attacks on critical infrastructure. This topic has been the subject of "intense consultations" among allies and partners.
It's worth noting that the United States has been a major supporter of Ukraine since 2014, providing billions in aid. The full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia began on February 24, 2022, escalating a conflict that started with Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014.
As the war continues, the upcoming U.S. presidential election scheduled for November 5, 2024, may potentially impact future Ukraine policy. This adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing diplomatic efforts and strategic planning.
