D.C. Metro Announces Holiday Closures for Track Maintenance

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority has announced a series of station closures in downtown Washington, D.C. for the 2024 holiday season. These closures, primarily affecting the Blue, Orange, and Silver lines, are scheduled for track maintenance and improvements.

From December 20 to 30, 2024, the Farragut West, McPherson Square, and Metro Center stations (Blue, Orange, Silver train level) will be closed. The closure will extend to Federal Triangle, Smithsonian, and L'Enfant Plaza stations from December 27 to 30, 2024. During this period, trains on the affected lines will operate in two segments, one on each side of the closed stations.

Metro officials stated that they "strategically picked closure dates to minimize customer impact" due to lower ridership during this time of year. To accommodate passengers, shuttle buses will replace train service at the closed stations.

The Washington Metro, the third-busiest rapid transit system in the United States, has been serving the D.C. area since 1976. With six lines covering 117 miles of track and 91 stations, it plays a crucial role in the region's transportation infrastructure. The system's unique architecture, designed by Harry Weese, has won several design awards and features the distinctive "waffle" ceiling in many underground stations.

The planned work includes replacing outdated concrete pads, rail studs, and fasteners on the tracks, as well as improving platform lighting. These upgrades are part of ongoing efforts to enhance safety and reliability, following significant concerns in the 2010s that led to extensive repairs.

This maintenance schedule mirrors a similar shutdown on the Red Line during the previous year's holiday season. That closure caused frustration among downtown businesses, particularly stores and theaters that rely on holiday visitors.

"We understand the inconvenience these closures may cause, but they are necessary to ensure the long-term safety and efficiency of our system. We appreciate our riders' patience and understanding during this period."

The timing of these closures highlights the delicate balance Metro must strike between necessary maintenance and minimizing disruption to riders and businesses. While the holiday season typically sees lower ridership, with the system's peak daily trips exceeding 750,000 in 2008, the impact on local commerce remains a concern.

As Metro continues to evolve, with the Silver Line being the newest addition in 2014, these maintenance efforts are crucial for maintaining the system's infrastructure. The Washington Metro, featured in numerous films and TV shows set in D.C., remains an iconic part of the city's landscape and a vital component of its transportation network.
