Dock collapse during Georgia island festival leaves 7 dead

A year ago‚ a terrible accident happened on Sapelo Island Georgia. A part of a boat dock fell apart‚ and at least 20 people ended up in the Atlantic Ocean. Sadly‚ seven people died because of this.

The U.S Coast Guard sent ships to look for people who were missing. This happened while people were having a party for the small Gullah-Geechee group on the island (they are Black people whose families used to be slaves)

The accident took place when lots of people were waiting to get on a ferry. The walkway they were standing on broke. This island is about 60 miles away from Savannah and you can only get there by boat. It takes about 20 minutes to get to the island on the state-run ferry.

People were there for Cultural Day. This is a party they have every year to remember the islands old Black community. These people are special because:

  • They kept a lot of their African ways
  • They live on islands from Georgia to North Carolina
  • They stayed the same because they were far away from other people

The Georgia DNR (thats the Department of Natural Resources) said they were thinking about everyone who was hurt‚ and the whole Sapelo Island group

The people in charge dont know why the accident happened yet. But they sent helicopters and boats with sonar to try and find people who might still be out there
