Anthony Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), recently experienced a health setback. The 83-year-old public health expert was hospitalized for six days due to West Nile virus infection, as confirmed by his spokesperson.

Fauci, who retired from his position at NIAID in December 2022 after nearly four decades of service, has been a prominent figure in American public health. His career spans several significant health crises, including the HIV/AIDS epidemic of the 1980s and 1990s, and most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic.

West Nile virus, first isolated in Uganda in 1937 and detected in North America in 1999, is a mosquito-borne illness. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) state that symptoms can include fever, body aches, diarrhea, and rash. Currently, there are no specific vaccines or treatments available for this virus.

Despite his retirement from government service, Fauci continues to be involved in public health discussions. In June 2024, he testified before a House panel investigating the COVID-19 response, addressing accusations from Republican lawmakers regarding the virus's origins.

Fauci's contributions to public health are extensive. He has been a key advisor to seven U.S. presidents on HIV/AIDS and other health issues, played a significant role in the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), and is one of the most cited scientists in scientific journals worldwide. His accolades include the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the National Medal of Science.

Currently, Fauci holds positions at Georgetown University as a distinguished professor in the School of Medicine and at the McCourt School of Public Policy. In the summer of 2024, he released his memoir titled "On Call," chronicling his long career in public health and medicine.
