Christopher Elder, 46, was identified as the suspect in the shooting that took place in the parking lot of the Hardin County Justice Center. The victims were Erica Riley, 37, and her mother, Janet Riley, 71. A third individual, a male relative of the women, was hospitalized in stable condition. The trio had arrived for a court hearing regarding a protective order against Elder.
Following the shooting, authorities located Elder's vehicle on a highway in western Kentucky. During the pursuit, the suspect reportedly pointed a rifle at officers multiple times. The chase concluded in the Fruit Hill community of Christian County, where Elder drove into a church parking lot.
A tense 90-minute standoff ensued, during which police negotiators attempted to communicate with Elder. Tragically, the situation ended when the suspect shot himself in the head. He was airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, a leading academic medical facility, where he succumbed to his injuries the following evening.
