Massive 2,492-Carat Diamond Unearthed in Botswana, Set for Display

In a remarkable development for the global diamond industry, Lucara Diamond Corp., a Canadian mining company, has announced the discovery of an extraordinary 2,492-carat diamond at its Karowe Mine in western Botswana. This exceptional find is believed to be the largest diamond ever unearthed in Botswana and the second-largest mined diamond in history.

The discovery, made using advanced X-ray technology, has sent ripples through the gemstone world. The Botswana government has confirmed that this high-quality, intact stone will be put on public display on August 22, 2024, allowing enthusiasts and experts alike to marvel at its magnificence.

This latest find further cements Botswana's position as a leading diamond producer. The country, which gained independence from Britain in 1966, has seen its economy flourish largely due to its rich diamond deposits. It surpasses the famous Sewelo diamond, also found at the Karowe Mine in 2019, which weighed 1,758 carats and was acquired by French luxury brand Louis Vuitton. Another notable discovery from the same mine was the 1,111-carat Lesedi La Rona diamond, sold to a British jeweler for $53 million in 2017.

However, the reigning champion of mined diamonds remains the Cullinan Diamond, discovered in South Africa in 1905. Weighing an astounding 3,106 carats, the Cullinan was eventually cut into smaller gems, some of which now adorn the British Crown Jewels.

Botswana's diamond industry has played a crucial role in the country's development.
