Moldova gears up for presidential vote and EU referendum

Moldova a small country sandwiched between Romania and Ukraine is preparing for a crucial vote. In two days citizens will cast their ballots for both a presidential election and a referendum on European Union membership.

Maia Sandu the current pro-Western president‚ is seeking re-election. Sheʼs been in office since about four years ago and her party gained control of parliament roughly three years back. Sandu has been pushing for closer ties with the West and has set an ambitious goal of EU membership by 2030.

The election features 11 candidates‚ but polls suggest Sandu is the front-runner with 35.8% support. Her main rivals Alexandr Stoianoglo (backed by the pro-Russian Socialists) and Renato Usatii (a former mayor) trail significantly. If no candidate secures over 50% of votes a run-off will happen in about two weeks.

Simultaneously voters will decide on a referendum to make EU membership a constitutional goal. This move has faced criticism from some opponents who see it as a political maneuver to boost Sanduʼs campaign. The CBS-AXA poll indicates 55.1% support for joining the EU.

The election is happening against a backdrop of tension. Moldovan authorities have reported attempts at foreign interference:

  • Criminal groups allegedly backed by Russia aiming to disrupt the vote
  • Claims of a $15 million bribery scheme to influence voters (denied by the accused)
  • Concerns about ongoing Russian military presence in the breakaway region of Transdnistria

Moldova has grappled with energy challenges since Russias invasion of Ukraine about two and a half years ago. The country has been seeking alternative sources to reduce dependence on Russian gas.

The outcome of this election could shape Moldovas future direction – either continuing its pro-Western course or potentially shifting back towards Russian influence
