Russia Boosts Military Recruitment with Lucrative Contracts Amid Ongoing Conflict

In a strategic move to bolster its military strength, Russia has intensified its recruitment efforts, offering substantial financial incentives to attract volunteers. This initiative comes as the country seeks to avoid another round of compulsory mobilization, which proved highly unpopular in October 2022.

Vladimir Putin recently ordered an increase in the Russian army's size by 180,000 troops, aiming to reach 1.5 million active servicemen. This expansion would make Russia's military the second largest globally, surpassed only by China. The Russian Armed Forces, with the fifth-largest military budget worldwide, have been undergoing modernization efforts since the early 2000s.

One new recruit, identified by the call sign "Mara," exemplifies the success of these recruitment efforts. After a 20-year hiatus from military service, Mara rejoined the army, motivated by a sense of duty and concern for the future. He stated, "We have a new generation growing up, my son is growing up, he will also join the armed forces this year. But it is better for his father to go to war than for our children to go."

Russia's military doctrine allows for the use of nuclear weapons in specific circumstances, highlighting the strategic importance of maintaining a strong conventional force. The country's armed forces include various branches, such as the Army, Navy, Aerospace Forces, and Strategic Missile Troops, each playing a crucial role in national defense.

Another recruit, known as "Ghoul," emphasized that his decision to join was not financially motivated. He expressed a desire to be more useful at the front than in civilian life, reflecting a sense of patriotic duty. "Sitting in an office, working at a factory, is also a noble cause. But I am a man after all. I think that I will be more useful there (at the front) than here. With each passing hour I am convinced that I made the right choice."
