Samsung Recalls 1.2 Million Ovens Due to Fire Hazard
Samsung initiates a major recall of over 1.2 million ovens due to fire risk from accidental activation. The company offers free knob covers to address the issue affecting multiple models.
Samsung, the South Korean electronics giant, has announced a significant recall affecting more than 1.2 million ovens. The recall, initiated on 2024-08-08, stems from a potential fire hazard associated with the accidental activation of front-mounted knobs on their Electric Slide-In Range models.
Since 2013, Samsung has received over 300 reports of accidental ignition incidents involving these ovens. These incidents have resulted in approximately 250 fires, with 18 cases causing extensive property damage. Alarmingly, about 40 injuries have been reported, and seven incidents tragically led to pet fatalities.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a warning to consumers, advising against placing, leaving, or storing items on top of the range. This precaution is crucial as objects can ignite if the appliance is accidentally activated.
To address this safety concern, Samsung is offering a free set of knob covers to affected customers. Consumers can contact the company through various channels to obtain these safety devices:
- Call toll-free at 833-775-0120 (9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern time, Monday through Friday)
- Email at rangesupport@sea.samsung.com
- Visit samsung.com/us/support/range-knob-kit
The recall encompasses multiple oven models, with the model number located on the inside upper-left corner of the oven door or inside the storage bin beneath the oven. Affected models include various iterations of the NE58 and NE63 series.
"Never place, leave or store items on top of the range, as the items can ignite if the appliance is accidentally activated."
This recall highlights the importance of product safety in home appliances. Samsung, founded in 1938, has a long history in the electronics industry, entering the sector in the late 1960s. The company has been a major player in the home appliance market since the early 1990s, introducing its first microwave oven in 1979.
As the world's largest television manufacturer since 2006 and a leading producer of mobile phones, Samsung has a significant global presence. The company operates manufacturing facilities in over 80 countries and has its headquarters in Samsung Town, Seoul.
While Samsung has faced recalls in the past, including a major smartphone recall in 2016, the company continues to invest heavily in research and development for smart home technologies. This commitment to innovation, coupled with responsive action to safety concerns, demonstrates Samsung's dedication to consumer safety and product quality.
Consumers are urged to check their oven models and contact Samsung promptly if their appliance is affected by this recall. The company's swift action in providing free knob covers aims to mitigate the fire risk and ensure the safety of its customers.
