Sydney's Beloved Gay Penguin Sphen Passes Away, Partner Magic Mourns
Sphen, part of Sydney Aquarium's famous same-sex penguin couple, has died. His partner Magic's touching response and their impact on LGBTQ+ representation have moved many worldwide.
Sphen, a Gentoo penguin who became a global symbol for same-sex relationships, has passed away at SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium. His partner, Magic, responded with a poignant song, highlighting the deep bonds these animals form.
The pair gained fame in 2018 when aquarium staff noticed them building a nest together. They were given an egg to incubate, cementing their status as a same-sex couple. Gentoo penguins, known for their monogamous nature, often return to the same breeding site annually. This species is remarkable for its swimming abilities, reaching speeds of up to 22 mph and diving to depths of 655 feet.
Sphen and Magic's story resonated beyond the aquarium, inspiring a float in Sydney's Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade and featuring in the Netflix series "Atypical". Their relationship shed light on same-sex behaviors observed in wild Gentoo populations, contributing to broader discussions on animal sexuality.
Sphen lived to be nearly 12 years old, aligning with the average lifespan of Gentoo penguins. When staff brought Magic to see Sphen's body, he began to sing, prompting a chorus from the other 45 penguins in the colony. Gentoo penguins are known for their loud, trumpet-like calls, which partners can identify among the colony.
"Sphen and Magic's love story captivated the world and it's been an honour to welcome local and international fans."
The aquarium is now focusing on Magic's well-being as he prepares for his first breeding season without Sphen. Gentoo penguins typically lay up to two eggs per season and engage in unique courtship rituals involving pebble gift-giving.
Public tributes have poured in, with fans expressing gratitude for the joy and inspiration the couple brought to their lives. As near-threatened species due to climate change and overfishing, Sphen and Magic's story also raised awareness about conservation efforts for these remarkable birds.
