Turkish Nationalists Assault U.S. Sailors in Izmir, 15 Detained

In a concerning incident on September 2, 2024, members of a Turkish nationalist youth organization physically assaulted two U.S. soldiers in Izmir, Turkey's third-largest city. The attack occurred in the Konak district, the central area of this historic port city on the Aegean Sea.

The assailants, identified as members of the Turkey Youth Union (TGB), targeted the American servicemen who were dressed in civilian attire. The TGB, founded in 2006, is affiliated with the Vatan Party, a left-wing nationalist political group in Turkey.

Local authorities swiftly responded to the situation. The Izmir governor's office reported that 15 individuals involved in the attack were detained, and an investigation was promptly initiated. Five additional U.S. soldiers intervened upon witnessing the assault, leading to police involvement.

The U.S. Embassy in Turkey confirmed the incident, stating, "U.S. service members embarked aboard the USS Wasp were the victims of an assault in Izmir today, and are now safe." The USS Wasp, a multipurpose amphibious assault ship capable of carrying over 1,600 troops and various aircraft, was conducting a scheduled port visit to Izmir during the week of the incident.

This event highlights the complex relationship between the United States and Turkey, both NATO allies. Despite their strategic partnership, tensions have emerged in recent years over various geopolitical issues. The U.S. maintains several military installations in Turkey, including the significant Incirlik Air Base.

The TGB shared a video of the attack on social media, depicting a group restraining a man and placing a white hood over his head while chanting slogans. In their statement, the organization expressed strong anti-American sentiment, referencing perceived grievances against the United States.

This incident occurs against the backdrop of Turkey's ongoing candidacy for European Union membership, a process that began in 1999. The assault on U.S. servicemen may potentially impact diplomatic relations and Turkey's international standing.
