UN Contractor Among Two Killed in Israeli Strike on Southern Lebanon
An Israeli strike in Naqoura, Lebanon, resulted in two fatalities, including a UN peacekeeping mission contractor. The incident heightens tensions in the ongoing Israel-Hezbollah conflict.
On September 1, 2024, an Israeli strike in the southern Lebanese town of Naqoura resulted in the deaths of two individuals, including a contractor for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). This incident marks another escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, which has persisted since October 2023.
UNIFIL spokesperson Kandice Ardiel confirmed that one of the victims was an employee of a cleaning company contracted by the UN agency. The other casualty was reportedly a visitor from abroad. Ardiel emphasized, "Attacks on civilians are violations of international humanitarian law."
The strike targeted a car in Naqoura, which serves as UNIFIL's headquarters in Lebanon. Established in 1978, UNIFIL's primary mission is to confirm Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon and maintain peace along the Blue Line, a border demarcation established by the UN in 2000. The peacekeeping force currently comprises over 10,000 personnel from various nations.
This latest incident occurs against the backdrop of nearly daily exchanges of fire between Israel and Hezbollah since October 8, 2023. The conflict ignited following a Hamas-led incursion into southern Israel on October 7, which sparked the war in Gaza. Hezbollah, founded in 1985 during the Lebanese Civil War, began launching rockets into Israel in solidarity with Hamas.
The ongoing hostilities have resulted in significant casualties and displacements on both sides of the approximately 120-kilometer-long Lebanon-Israel border. Since October 2023, nearly 600 individuals have lost their lives in Lebanon, predominantly Hezbollah fighters and allied groups, but also including over 100 civilians. In northern Israel, 49 people have been killed, comprising 23 soldiers and 26 civilians.
Hezbollah maintains that it will cease fire once a ceasefire agreement is reached to end Israel's military operations in Gaza. However, the situation remains volatile, with international concerns about potential escalation into a wider conflict. The United Nations and various governments have consistently urged an end to the fighting.
This current tension echoes the 2006 Lebanon War, a 34-day conflict between Israel and Hezbollah that resulted in over 1,100 Lebanese and 165 Israeli deaths. The war concluded with UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which called for a full cessation of hostilities.
"The contractor's employee and another individual in the car, who we understand was visiting from abroad, were killed. Attacks on civilians are violations of international humanitarian law."
The ongoing conflict is further complicated by Lebanon's economic crisis, which began in 2019 and has exacerbated regional tensions. Additionally, the absence of formal diplomatic relations between Israel and Lebanon adds to the complexity of resolving the situation.
As the international community continues to call for de-escalation, the incident in Naqoura serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of the ongoing conflict and the urgent need for a peaceful resolution.
