U.S. Approves $20 Billion Arms Sale to Israel Amid Regional Tensions

The United States has sanctioned a substantial arms sale to Israel, as announced by the State Department on August 13, 2024. This $20 billion package includes various military equipment, with a focus on enhancing Israel's long-term defense capabilities.

At the core of this agreement are more than 50 Boeing F-15 fighter jets. These advanced aircraft, capable of reaching speeds up to Mach 2.5 (approximately 1,650 mph), are set to significantly bolster Israel's air power. The deal also encompasses Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs), 120 mm tank ammunition, high explosive mortars, and tactical vehicles.

It's important to note that this arms sale is not an immediate transfer of equipment. The contracts are expected to take years to fulfill, with the first F-15 deliveries anticipated in 2029. This long-term approach aligns with the ongoing U.S.-Israel defense cooperation, which has seen Israel become the largest cumulative recipient of U.S. foreign assistance since World War II.

The State Department emphasized the importance of this sale in maintaining Israel's self-defense capabilities. A spokesperson stated, "This proposed sale is consistent with U.S. national interests to assist Israel in developing and maintaining a strong and ready self-defense capability."

The Biden administration faces the challenge of balancing continued support for Israel with growing concerns over civilian casualties in Gaza. Notably, the U.S. has recently curbed the delivery of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel, reflecting these concerns.

The comprehensive nature of this arms package is evident in its scope. Beyond the new F-15s, it includes upgrade kits for Israel's existing fleet of 24 F-15 fighter jets.
