US Envoy Criticizes Israeli Military Actions in Gaza at UN Meeting
US Ambassador to UN expresses concern over Israeli strikes on civilians in Gaza. Calls for changes in military operations amid ongoing humanitarian crisis and efforts for ceasefire.
In a recent United Nations Security Council meeting, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the U.S. Ambassador to the UN, expressed significant concerns regarding Israel's military actions in Gaza. This marks a notable shift in the United States' stance towards its long-standing ally, as the conflict approaches its first anniversary.
Thomas-Greenfield highlighted the issue of strikes on schools, humanitarian workers, and civilians, stating that many of these incidents were avoidable. Her comments come in the wake of a controversial strike on a former school turned civilian shelter operated by UNRWA, which resulted in multiple casualties, including six staff members.
The ongoing conflict has its roots in the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023, which claimed approximately 1,200 lives in southern Israel. Since then, the situation has escalated dramatically, with the Gaza Health Ministry reporting over 41,000 Palestinian casualties. It's important to note that this figure does not differentiate between civilians and combatants.
Danny Danon, Israel's UN ambassador, defended his country's actions, asserting that Israel targets Hamas militants who often use civilians as human shields. He claimed that the recent strike on the UNRWA facility targeted a Hamas command center and resulted in the deaths of several militants.
"We have also been unequivocal in communicating to Israel that there is no basis — absolutely none — for its forces to be opening fire on clearly marked U.N. vehicles as recently occurred on numerous occasions."
The U.S. Ambassador called for fundamental changes in Israeli military operations, including revisions to rules of engagement and procedures to prevent conflicts with humanitarian activities. She also expressed outrage at the death of Aysenur Eygi, a Turkish-American activist killed during a protest in the West Bank.
Humanitarian efforts in Gaza face significant challenges, as described by Sigrid Kaag, the UN senior humanitarian coordinator for Gaza. She cited issues such as lawlessness, Israeli evacuation orders, and difficulties in aid delivery due to various obstacles.
As the conflict continues, international efforts to broker a ceasefire and secure the release of hostages remain ongoing. Antony Blinken, the U.S. Secretary of State, is set to visit Egypt for talks aimed at refining a proposal for both parties.
The situation in Gaza underscores the complex nature of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which has been a focal point of international diplomacy for decades. The United Nations, established in 1945, has played a significant role in addressing this issue through its various agencies and resolutions.
As the international community grapples with the ongoing crisis, the need for a sustainable solution becomes increasingly urgent. The densely populated Gaza Strip, under blockade since 2007, faces severe humanitarian challenges that require immediate attention and long-term strategies for resolution.
