Zelenskiy Seeks Long-Range Strike Capabilities at Ramstein Meeting

On September 6, 2024, Volodymyr Zelenskiy made his inaugural appearance at the Ramstein group meeting in Germany, advocating for enhanced long-range strike capabilities for Ukraine. This gathering, established in April 2022, brings together representatives from approximately 50 nations that provide military assistance to Kyiv.

Zelenskiy emphasized the critical need for improved air defense systems and long-range strike capacity to counter Russian aggression. The Ukrainian leader stated, "We require these long-range capabilities not only within Ukraine but also to reach Russian territory, incentivizing Russia to pursue peace."

This plea comes in response to recent intensified Russian attacks on Ukraine using drones and missiles. The conflict, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion approximately 30 months ago, has led to significant changes in Ukraine's defense strategy. Since 2014, Ukraine has been developing its own unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for military purposes and has increased its defense spending to about 5% of GDP in recent years.

During his visit, Zelenskiy planned meetings with U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius. He also intended to confer with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. These discussions are part of Ukraine's ongoing efforts to secure support from Western allies.

"We need to have these long-range capabilities not only on the ... territory of Ukraine but also on Russian territory, so that Russia is motivated to seek peace."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated:

It's worth noting that while Ukraine seeks increased military support, it is not covered by NATO's Article 5 collective defense principle as it is not a member of the alliance. However, the United States has provided over $40 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since 2014.

Following his German visit, Zelenskiy was scheduled to travel to Italy to participate in the Ambrosetti international economic forum, an annual conference held since 1975. He also planned talks with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to coordinate positions with G7 allies.

As Ukraine continues to defend its sovereignty, the international community's response, including multiple rounds of sanctions imposed by the European Union on Russia, plays a crucial role in shaping the conflict's trajectory.
