Zelensky to Present Ukraine Strengthening Plan to Biden at UN Assembly

One year ago, Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, announced a strategic initiative aimed at fortifying Ukraine's position in its ongoing conflict with Russia. This plan, set to be presented to US President Joe Biden, was described as a potential pathway to a sustainable resolution.
Zelensky outlined his intentions during the annual Yalta European Strategy conference, a prominent gathering of Ukrainian and Western officials established by Ukrainian businessman Viktor Pinchuk in 2004. The Ukrainian leader emphasized that while the plan might not immediately halt hostilities, it would significantly enhance Ukraine's standing.
"If we have no illusions, if we all want one day to hear the words, finally, a just peace has come to Ukraine, then we should hear right now that Ukraine has become strong enough … for victory. Тhis will be the guarantee."
The Ukrainian President was scheduled to travel to the United States for the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he planned to meet with Biden. This annual UN meeting, typically held in September, provides a global platform for world leaders to address international issues.
Zelensky indicated that following his discussion with Biden, he intended to share the plan with other key US political figures, including Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, as well as members of Congress. However, he refrained from divulging specific details, noting that the plan's implementation would largely depend on Biden's decisions.
In addition to presenting his strategic plan, Zelensky reiterated his appeal to Western allies for the provision of long-range missiles. These advanced weapons would enable Ukraine to target locations deeper within Russian territory, potentially altering the dynamics of the conflict that has been ongoing since 2014, with a full-scale invasion beginning in February 2022.
The concept of "reliable peace" that Zelensky aims to achieve through this plan is not unprecedented in international relations. It often involves creating conditions that reduce the likelihood of future conflicts, addressing the root causes of the current hostilities.
