Two people, one in a critical condition, have been taken to hospital following a two-car crash just outside of Geraldine.
A St John spokesperson said the critically injured patient was flown to Christchurch Hospital, while the other in a moderate condition was taken to Timaru Hospital, following the crash at the intersection of Geraldine-Fairlie Hwy (SH 79) and Pleasant Valley Rd just after 4pm on Tuesday.
Earlier, a police spokeswoman told Stuff one person, in a serious condition, was understood to be trapped inside a vehicle.
Both vehicles were removed from the road but motorists have been advised to expect delays, police said.
The NZ Transport Agency issued a statement advising motorists to follow any directions of emergency services on site.
A spokesperson for Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) said a crew is in attendance.
