KZN weather: Disruptive rain, thundershowers and hail expected

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow level 2 warning for thunderstorms in parts of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). 

This follows another recent warning on thunderstorms and hail for parts of KZN including Mandeni, Maphumulo, New Hanover and Ndwedwe amongst other areas affected. 

WEATHER WARNING ISSUED FOR KZN 

The weather service said thunderstorms are currently being observed in parts of Harry Gwala, uMgungundlovu, moving towards the east and south-east. They are expected to affect parts of uMzinyathi and uThukela. 

“These storms are accompanied by hail, heavy downpours, strong damaging winds and severe lightning,” SAWS said. 

POSSIBLE IMPACTS:

Localised damage to vehicles and structural damage due to hail

Localised damage to infrastructure

Minor vehicle accidents, difficult driving conditions and increased travelling times

Localised injuries due to flying debris.

HEAVY DOWNPOURS EXPECTED IN EASTERN CAPE

On Sunday, the weather service had issued another level 2 warning for several areas in Eastern Cape. 

Some of the affected areas include: 

  • Nyandeni 
  • Libode
  • King Sabata Dalindyebo
  • Mthatha
  • Port St Johns
  • Mbhashe
  • Dutywa
  • Mnquma 
  • Butterworth
  • Great Kei
  • Komga
  • Sundays River Valley
  • Addo

“Localised flooding of susceptible informal settlements and low-lying roads and bridges is possible, especially in flood-prone areas. Major roads will be affected but can be used with increased travel times,” the SAWS said. 

It furthermore warned residents to stay indoors.  

“If possible, stay indoors and off the roads, avoid crossing rivers and swollen streams where water is above your ankles.”
