The SA Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) has imposed a series of sanctions on South African athletes across several sports.

REPORT | SA SCHOOLS PLAYERS TESTS POSITIVE FOR BANNED SUBSTANCE

The sport most affected was bodybuilding, which was responsible for 10 of the 15 bans handed down.

The SAIDS sanctions listed below were for the period December 2021 to February 2022.

  • A four (4) year sanction from all sport on the International Federation Bodybuilding South African (IFBBSA) athlete, Ernest Mahlangu, following an anti-doping rule violation. Mr. Mahlangu tested positive for the presence of Canrenone; Anastrozole; Oxandrolone, Drostanolone, Stanozolol, Testosterone, Trenbolone, Mesterolone, Methasterone, Metandionone, Tamoxifen and Salbutamol. His period of ineligibility began on 2ndDecember 2021 (the date he was notified of his provisional suspension) and will serve until and including 2ndDecember 2025.
  • A four (4) year sanction from all sport on the International Federation Bodybuilding South African (IFBBSA) athlete, Michael van Niekerk, following an anti-doping rule violation. Mr. van Niekerk tested positive for the presence of Methamphetamine, Amphetamine, Anastrozole, Carboxy THC, 19-norandrosterone, Nandrolone, 19 noreticholanolone, Trenbolone, Drostanolone, Oxymetholone, Methasterone and Methylphenethylamine. His period of ineligibility began on 13th December 2021 (the date he was notified of his provisional suspension) and will serve until and including 13th December 2025.
