In a concerning development, four individuals, including an army officer, were abducted by suspected militants in Dera Ismail Khan, a city in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The incident occurred on August 28, 2024, following a funeral service.
Lieutenant Colonel Khalid Khan, along with his two brothers (both government officers) and a nephew, were taken from a mosque where they were receiving mourners after attending the officer's father's funeral. The kidnapping took place in an area previously known as a stronghold of the Pakistani Taliban, also referred to as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
Local law enforcement official Ikram Ullah confirmed that efforts are underway to locate and rescue the abducted individuals. The Pakistani military and government have not yet commented on the situation.
This incident is particularly noteworthy as it deviates from the typical tactics employed by the TTP, which usually targets security forces through different means. The TTP, formed in 2007, is distinct from the Afghan Taliban but shares ideological similarities and has been emboldened since the latter's rise to power in Afghanistan in August 2021.
The kidnapping comes in the wake of a deadly attack by Baloch separatists, allies of the TTP, in the southwestern province of Balochistan. The assault, which occurred around August 25, 2024, resulted in over 50 fatalities, including 14 security personnel, marking one of the most severe incidents in the region's recent history.
In response to these events, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is scheduled to visit Balochistan on August 29, 2024, to receive a briefing on ongoing operations against insurgents.
