In a well-timed diplomatic move Xie Feng Chinaʼs ambassador to Washington spoke at hong kong this friday about building better ties with US. The ambassador pointed-out that China doesnt seek to overtake America; instead it wants to be a friend and partner
Speaking to a mixed group of Chinese officials and Nicholas Burns the US ambassador‚ Xie outlined several co-operation areas:
- trade and business deals
- farming sector growth
- energy resources
- AI development
- health-care systems
The timing is linked to possible changes in US leadership (as trump might return to white house in early-2025). While trump talks about 60% tariffs on chinese goods; Beijing thinks this could help them build stronger links with other countries
Xi Jinping chinas leader also made his point clear: we need more global trade not less. However experts say Chinaʼs position as an alternative to US leadership isnt as strong as it was 8 years ago
Its entirely possible to discuss issues openly and find solutions as equals
The ambassador named taiwan as the main risk-point that could cause problems between beijing and washington. He asked for clear stand against those who want taiwan to separate; though taiwan doesnt agree with chinas ownership claim
