Massive storm forces thousands to escape flooded Honduras streets
Last yearʼs Tropical Storm Sara brought heavy flooding to Honduras coastal regions‚ forcing over 1‚000 locals into emergency shelters. The storm threatened coffee production and tourist spots while moving towards nearby countries
Last november‚ residents of northern Honduras faced a tough situation when Tropical-Storm Sara hit their region. People walked through knee-high water carrying their stuff (including pets) while trying to get to safer places
The weather-system positioned itself near tourist-filled beaches and ancient Maya sites: its heavy rains caused major problems in the area. The storm brought between 15-25 inches of rain — with some places getting up to 35 inches — which made things really bad for local communities
Everyone living near rivers should move to higher ground right away
The government quickly made an emergency-call and helped more than 1000 people move to shelters. The storm (which had winds of about 50 mph) also got close to Hondurasʼ main coffee-growing areas
Weather experts said Sara would affect other places too:
- Eastern Guatemala
- Parts of Belize
- Western Nicaragua
- El Salvador
- Southern Mexico
The storm — which was spotted 35 miles from Guanaja island — started moving northwest towards Belize. Local weather guy Victor Ortega said this movement would begin after the weekend‚ bringing 5-15 inches of rain to nearby countries
