In yesterdays massive regional polls Prabowo Subiantoʼs coalition secured big wins across Indonesia‚ showing strong support in most key areas (except for an interesting twist in Jakarta)
The nation-wide voting included:
- 37 provinces
- 93 cities
- 415 districts
Prabowoʼs backed candidates‚ some sharing support with ex-president Jokowi‚ got control of mega-regions like West-Java‚ East-Java and Central-Java. In North-Sumatra Bobby Nasution (Jokowis son-in-law) also won the race
The capital city Jakarta shows different numbers - opposition party PDIPʼs candidates lead with 49-51% of votes; this might need a second voting round if nobody gets clear majority. “This is a triumph for Prabowo and Jokowi but with Jakarta its a failure“ - said Yanuar Nugroho from ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute
These results make it easier for Prabowo to push his plans: free school-meals poverty programs and food programs will now have strong regional support. With 7 out of 8 parties backing him in parliament the new president looks ready to start working
Some areas had voting problems - in Puncak Jaya Central Papua 94 people got hurt in election fights (with bow-and-arrow attacks and house fires). In North-Sumatras capital Medan flash-floods made voting harder but didnt stop the process
