Massive drug stash found in Caribbean banana container heading to Europe

Dominican authorities uncovered tons of cocaine hidden among bananas at Santo Domingo port. The shipment from Guatemala was meant to reach Belgium but got intercepted in what became a record-breaking bust

Carlos Denvers from drug control office shared big news: authorities found about 9.5 tons of cocaine (worth around $250-million) in Santo Domingoʼs port; the drugs were hidden in banana boxes

The container came from Guatemala and some people tried moving drugs to another box thats supposed to go to Belgium. The bust happened at Caucedo port - same place where back in 06 they found 2.5 tons which was the previous record

InSight Crime experts say Caribbean is getting hot again for drug moves: Europe needs more stuff these days (its using twice as much as it did in 2011)‚ so bad guys are using islands as a stop between South America and Europe. Dominican Republic has lots of big transport spots which makes it super-easy for these guys to move stuff around

  • Big ports make moving stuff easier
  • Lots of ships going to Europe daily
  • Hard to check every container
  • Good spot between producers and buyers

The whole thing shows how drug people are getting smart with their routes - hiding stuff in normal food boxes and using busy ports to slip through
