Native Brazilians gather in capital to defend their land ownership rights

Hundreds of indigenous people marched in Brasilia against a new land-rights amendment. The bill wants to set strict time limits on native peoples territorial claims based on 1988 constitution date

A big group of native people showed up in Brasilia this week wearing traditional body-paint and carrying animal pictures to make their voice heard. The protest happened because of a new bill thats making them worried about their lands future

The law-makers want to change Brazilʼs constitution to add some strict rules: if native groups didnt live on their land by oct-5 1988 (or werent fighting for it in court by then) they might lose their right to claim it. The agri-business group in Congress says this will help make land-ownership more clear-cut; however indigenous leaders dont agree with this time-based cut-off

The proposed change could stop new land claims and even take back some already-given territories — which is making native communities very un-easy about their future. The farm-industry supporters (who have strong presence in government) are pushing hard for this amendment: they think it will solve long-running property disputes
