The political scene in eastern Germany has shifted since a new left-wing party entered the stage early this yr. The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) led by Sahra Wagenknecht gained significant support in three eastern states elections this fall making it a key-player in forming new governments
In Brandenburg state‚ BSWʼs influence already shows results — the local Social Democrats (SPD) joined them in a statement against weapons for Ukraine which created a stir in Berlin. “The war will not be ended by further weapons deliveries“ [[joint BSW-SPD statement in Brandenburg]]
The partyʼs success (getting 7-9% in polls) means it cant be ignored; however its anti-NATO views and Russia-friendly position create problems for mainstream parties. In Thuringia local BSW leader Katja Wolf tries to work with other parties — but party headquarters wants stronger anti-war positions in agreements
The BSW mixes old-style economic ideas with strict immigration rules which helps it get votes. Wagenknecht who started as a communist theorist now appears often on TV shows. Yet some experts think the party might not last long: her previous project “Rise Up“ ended quickly about 5 years ago
The situation affects Chancellor Scholzs government too — his SPD party faces internal disagreements about Ukraine policy. Some SPD members dont like the Brandenburg deal while others seem more open to working with BSW. This creates problems in Berlins ruling coalition which already has its share of troubles
