Acting Secret Service boss Ronald L Rowe Jr spoke to Congress this thursday about big changes in how they protect important people. His talk came bout 5 months after that scary july incident in Butler PA‚ where someone shot at then president-elect Donald Trump during a rally (one person died and three got hurt including Trump)
The meeting got pretty heated — lawmakers and Rowe got into some loud back-and-forth arguments about whats wrong with the agency. Rowe didnt try to dodge blame: “the gravity of our failure“ he said pointing to problems with intel-sharing and team communication
The changes came after looking at several issues:
- Better ways to spot threats early
- New rules for sharing important info
- Different training for agents
- Fixed chain-of-command stuff
Congress members pushed hard on culture problems in the service too — Rowe explained how theyre fixing things from top-to-bottom. The whole meeting showed how much work needs doing to keep VIPs safe‚ but at least theyre making real changes now
