Tesla leads car makers in green credits while others struggle to catch up

Car makers face challenges meeting new eco-rules‚ while Tesla dominates with huge emission credits. Industry stats show rising electric car sales but most companies still need to buy credits to meet standards

In the past year Tesla became the biggest player in car emission credits creating 34M tons while other makers fell behind. The car industry got better at saving fuel reaching 27‚1 mpg (a small step-up from last year) but its still not enough to meet tough rules

The numbers show interesting trends: SUVs now make up 58% of all sales; regular cars dropped to just 25%. Cars are getting bigger heavier and more powerful than ever - which doesnt help save fuel. Electric cars went up from about 7% to 11‚5% of production (and might reach almost 15% next year)

General Motors had the biggest problems with credits: they had to buy 44M of them and give up another 49M because of some past issues. The whole industry (except Tesla) ended up short 43‚5M credits but they still have a big pile saved up - about 123M tons for later use

Looking at whos doing best with fuel saving we see:

  • Tesla at the top spot
  • Kia in second place
  • Hyundai coming in third

Meanwhile StellantisGM and Ford are at the bottom of this list. The EPA made new rules in spring: car makers need to cut bad emissions by half before 2032‚ which is a bit easier than what they first wanted but still pretty tough
