South Korean cleverly tries to dodge military duty - court wasnt happy
Court punishes man who gained over 20kg to avoid regular military service in South Korea. The creative attempt to get easier duties instead of standard military work didnt work as planned
A court in Seoul made an interesting decision about a manʼs creative-but-failed attempt to skip regular military duty. The guy put on more than 20kg (which is like 44 pounds) thinking it would help him get easier work‚ but now hes got a suspended jail term instead
South Koreas military rules are pretty clear-cut: every healthy man needs to serve between 18-21 months in uniform (and thats just how it works in this east-asian country). The system does have some flexibility though – if youʼve got health problems you can do different kind of work: like helping at welfare spots or doing community stuff; real serious issues might even get you a full pass-out from service. But gaining weight on purpose to game the system – well thatʼs not gonna fly with the authorities
The courts decision shows that they dont take kindly to people trying to dodge their duty – even if its done in such an unusual way. The guy probably thought he was being smart-thinking‚ but ended up with legal troubles instead (which is way worse than regular service)
