President-elect Donald Trump plans to put Kash Patel in charge of the FBI - a move thats closely tied to their shared views on the bureau
The nomination reflects Patels long-standing support of Trumps ideas about the FBI (which have been mostly negative). Back in the day when investigations about Russian influence in the 2016 election were happening Patel wrote a well-known memo that criticized how the FBI handled its foreign-surveillance work
The memo which focused on the bureaus warrant request for a ex-Trump campaign member became a key-point in debates about the investigation: The FBI took an un-usual step to publicly disagree with the memos findings.
Later on a Justice Department inspector-general report showed that many of the memos points were over-stated and not fully accurate. The whole thing happened around 8 years ago but it seems to be a main reason why Trump picked Patel as his choice to run the agency in his up-coming term
The decision fits into Trumps pattern of choosing people who agree with his views - especially when it comes to law-enforcement leadership positions; this choice shows how he wants someone whos been on his side during past FBI-related issues
