David Lammy the UKs foreign minister‚ and Wang Yi his Chinese counterpart got together for a meeting today. The get-together was described as constructive by British officials (who are known for their understatement)
The talks covered a wide range of topics‚ from areas where the two countries can work together to more tricky subjects. Both sides said they want to keep talking: theyre planning to have regular chats between their governments at the top level
During the meeting Lammy asked Wang to look into and stop Chinese companies from giving stuff to Russias military. This comes after the UK said a few months back that it was worried about Russia setting up a program in China to make long-range attack drones for use in Ukraine
The UK has been keeping an eye on this Russia-China thing for a while now. Theyʼre not happy about the idea of Chinese companies helping Russia out with its military especially when it comes to the Ukraine situation
Its clear that both Britain and China are trying to keep things civil‚ even when they dont see eye-to-eye on everything. They seem to think that talking is better than not talking – which is probably a good idea when youre dealing with big global issues
