Jake Sullivan, the U.S. National Security Adviser, has expressed concern about the potential escalation of tensions between Israel and Lebanon. This statement comes in the wake of a significant Israeli airstrike in a Beirut suburb, which resulted in numerous casualties, including high-ranking members of Hezbollah.
The airstrike, which occurred on September 20, 2024, claimed the lives of 37 individuals, as reported by Lebanon's health ministry. Among the deceased were 16 Hezbollah members, including senior leaders Ibrahim Aqil and Ahmed Wahbi. The incident marks the most severe clash in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah since October 8, 2023, when the group initiated rocket attacks into Israel in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

He stated, "While the risk of escalation is real, we actually believe there is also a distinct avenue to getting to a cessation of hostilities and a durable solution that makes people on both sides of the border feel secure."
Regarding the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Sullivan indicated that efforts to broker a ceasefire are continuing. The U.S. is collaborating with Qatar and Egypt, who are in communication with Hamas. However, Sullivan noted that the U.S. is not yet prepared to propose a deal that could be accepted by both parties involved in the conflict.
The situation remains volatile, with recent events further complicating peace efforts. On September 21, 2024, an Israeli airstrike on a school sheltering displaced people in southern Gaza City resulted in at least 22 fatalities, including 13 children and six women, according to Gaza's health ministry. Israel claims the strike targeted a Hamas command center allegedly embedded within the school.
