Fever will search for ways to slow raging Storm

It’s the best team in the WNBA against the worst team in the league for the second time in three nights Thursday as the Seattle Storm tries to continue their road domination while facing the Indiana Fever in Indianapolis.

Seattle (11-2) is looking to wrap up a perfect five-game road trip, while the Fever (1-12) are trying to figure out how to break an eight-game losing streak. Tuesday, the Storm handled Indiana, 87-70.

The Storm are 6-0 away from home this season and have won 10 consecutive regular-season road games, two shy of the league record.

The Fever have lost their eight consecutive games, regardless of location, by an average of 19 points.

Seattle boasts the WNBA’s best record and has matched its best 13-game start in franchise history. Breanna Stewart, Sue Bird and Jewell Loyd have fueled the reigning champion’s success.

Stewart scored 20 points Tuesday to go along with 12 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season.

Loyd added 18 points and Bird finished with 17 for the Storm in helping the Storm to their eighth double-digit win. Bird made three 3-pointers in the victory and now ranks second on the league’s all-time list with 909, trailing only Diana Taurasi’s record 1,173.

Seattle’s big three has been so effective, seven-time all-star Candice Dupree has averaged only 6.3 points since joining the Storm as a free agent in the offseason. In her 16th season, Dupree needs just two more points to move into fourth place on the league’s career scoring list.

Tuesday, she played only 13 minutes against the Fever, scoring four points against a team she spent four seasons with before leaving after last season.

“I met a lot of great people there,” Dupree said per the Seattle Times. “The winning and losing, that didn’t really go the way that it was planned. The biggest thing I learned there was how to be a better leader being that I played with so many younger players there.”

The Fever have shown promise lately. They came close at home against Chicago on Saturday before falling 83-79 and on Tuesday, they trailed Seattle by single digits with 7:55 remaining.

Kelsey Mitchell scored 26 points, her 10th game of the season in double figures.

“We’ve got to turn the page,” Mitchell said. “When we look at film, we soak it in and capitalize on what we can be better at, make it effective for this (next) game and throw that last game away.”
