Five reasons to check out Best of the Northwest, a tribute to Chris Cornell

Tribute to Chris Cornell: Best of the Northwest

When: July 20 at 9 p.m.

Where: Rickshaw Theatre

Tickets: $20 at chriscornell.ca, $25 at the door

1. Chris Cornell, Soundgarden and the sounds of the great Pacific Northwest. Though originally inspired by the death of Soundgarden lead singer Chris Cornell, the annual event also pays tribute to other Pacific Northwest bands. Seattle’s Washed in Black does Pearl Jam, while Vancouver’s Facelift gives it up for Alice in Chains.

2. Outshined. Seattle’s Outshined will perform songs spanning Cornell’s career, including his bands Temple of the Dog, Audioslave, his solo work — and, of course, Soundgarden. Civilian, another local act, is devoted to Audioslave (Cornell’s early-2000s band with Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello).

3. Superfan/tribute organizer Joan Frias. “I may well have heard Soundgarden growing up, but the first time I was really touched, I was in college studying economics in Manila,” Frias tells us. “I was working on a paper one night, suffering from a bit of writer’s block and I heard the chorus to Black Hole Sun (from the band’s 1993 album Superunknown) for the first time. That ethereal melody entered my soul and has remained there ever since. Something in the tune got me writing. I was immediately hooked.” This is Frias’ third Chris Cornell tribute, having produced the first one within a month of the singer’s May 2017 passing. Perhaps most impressively, she has claimed the url chriscornell.ca.

4. There’s art, too. Local artists are contributing murals, T-shirt designs and more.

5. Music therapy. After paying for overhead, Frias and her co-producer Derek Lundblad (who also plays in Civilian) are donating the proceeds to the Chris Cornell Music Therapy Program through Seattle-based non-profit Childhaven.
