On Friday, the Impact announced it had exercised its option on forward Romell Quioto for next season.

Monday, the Major League Soccer organization went one step further, announcing a contract extension for the talented Honduran. Quioto and the Impact agreed on a two-year extension, plus an option for the 2023 season.

“We’re happy to announce this contract extension for Romell, because it was important that he stayed with us,” Impact sporting director Olivier Renard said in a release. “All year long he has proved his value on the pitch through his performances, but also with his winning and leader mentality. That’s the fruit of his labor. Now it’s up to him to continue that work in order to achieve the club’s goals in the years to come.”

Quioto, 29, was a major reason why the Impact returned to the playoffs for the first time since 2016. He led the team in scoring, producing a career-high eight goals while adding six assists in 19 games, including 17 starts. He also scored Montreal’s only goal in its 2-1 loss at New England in the Eastern Conference play-in round match.
