Joyce Rosario announced as associate artistic director of PuSh International Performing Arts Festival

After seven seasons in various positions at the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival, Joyce Rosario has been appointed associate artistic director. Rosario, who joined in May 2013 as an associate curator for four years, has been the interim artistic director in 2018 following the departure of Norman Armour, the event’s co-founder and artistic and executive director.

PuSh had previously announced the appointment of Franco Boni as the new artistic and executive director. Since 2003, Boni has been the director of Toronto’s Theatre Centre and has an impressive list of awards for his work in that major city’s performing arts culture. He assumes his role on June 1.

“It feels good to have it official with the new configuration as we take the organization post-founder,” said Rosario. “Having someone who is very rooted in Vancouver and bringing in someone with a very proven record and outside perspective should really make for exciting developments moving forward.”

Returning the PuSh staff to a full compliment will be a relief as the large scale of the performing arts festival is extremely demanding to book. Rosario admits that the 2020/2021 schedule is first order of business. The future is bright.

“A lot of our colleagues go to the Festival Transamériques in Montreal, which is a real gateway to the European scene which makes sense because its in Quebec and where it is geographically,” said Rosario. “For me, I think PuSh could be that same kind of destination but for Asian contemporary performance work. We’ve had some, I’d love more.”
