Massive downtown demonstration to protest violence in East Jerusalem

Protesters blocking Elgin Street up to Parliament Hill on Saturday.

A noisy but orderly crowd estimated by police at 3,000 marched through Ottawa’s downtown core Saturday to protest the ongoing violence in Jerusalem.

The marchers gathered at the Human Rights Monument on Elgin Street at about 1 p.m. before heading off to the National War Memorial where they demonstrated briefly.

Police temporarily closed Elgin Street between Albert and Wellington streets, but reported no ticketing or arrests.

The demonstration was organized by groups representing Ottawa’s Palestinian community to condemn the violence and displacement of residents in East Jerusalem’s neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah.
