OTTAWA—Sophie Grégoire Trudeau will not get the chance to show off her home province to her American counterpart this week.
Leaders’ summits like the G7 typically include a program of events for the spouses of the leaders designed to showcase the host region and sometimes even underscore the priorities of the country hosting the event.
However, a spokeswoman for Melania Trump says the U.S. first lady won’t attend the G7 leaders’ summit in Charlevoix, Que., which starts Friday.
U.S. President Donald Trump is still scheduled to attend, but Melania’s absence is sure to fan the flames of social media speculation, since she has not been seen in public for nearly a month.
Melania spent nearly a week in hospital in May for what her office called a benign kidney problem but has not been seen publicly since May 10 and stayed home while the president travelled to Camp David over the weekend.
Melania did attend last year’s G7 summit in Italy and the G20 summit in Hamburg last July, but spent the first day of the latter gathering in her hotel suite due to violent protests.
