Montreal police arrest dozens in raids sparked by fentanyl overdoses

Officers of the Montreal police department’s organized crime division arrested 24 people on Wednesday and seized a quantity of drugs and cash in a series of raids in Montreal and elsewhere triggered by a wave of fentanyl overdoses in the city.

The raids, carried out with the assistance of police in Granby, Longueuil and Quebec City, are part of an investigation christened “Asterios” and will see those suspects taken into custody appear via video conference later on Wednesday at the Montreal courthouse.

Wednesday’s raids are a continuation of an operation that saw Montreal police execute warrants last November against members of the Minotaures West Montréal motorcycle gang in Montreal and Laval. The gang was suspected by police of being involved in a network distributing heroin and cocaine, and the raids netted investigators quantities of cocaine, cannabis, heroin and methamphetamine as well as firearms and ammunition.

The investigation was launched after a wave of overdose deaths linked to fentanyl were recorded in Montreal during the summer of 2017. At the time, Montreal police said they would trace the path the drug took in the case of each overdose and target those individuals and networks responsible for its sale and distribution.

Thus far, more than 40 raids have been carried out as part of the investigation.
