One killed in three-truck collision on Hwy. 401

One person is dead following a collision involving three commercial vehicles on Hwy. 401 in Newcastle Tuesday morning.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says the accident happened in the eastbound lanes just past Mill St. around 5 a.m.

He says a transport was broken down or disabled on the right shoulder when a stray truck struck the rear of the tractor trailer and became wedged at the back.

The two drivers exited their vehicles and were speaking when a tanker truck collided with the stray truck and ended up on the left shoulder.

It was not immediately clear which driver was killed.

Eastbound traffic is being forced off at Mill St. while Hwy. 401 westbound remains open. Police say the closure could remain in effect until at least noon.
