Quick-fire goals leave Nashville, Revs with 1-1 draw

Substitute Adam Buksa scored in the 77th minute to lift the New England Revolution to a 1-1 draw against Nashville SC on Friday night at Nissan Stadium.

Buksa’s fifth goal of the season canceled out Walker Zimmerman’s corner kick header just three minutes earlier that gave the hosts the lead in a cagey encounter.

Buksa’s leveler came on just the second shot on target for New England, and just the sixth for either side in a contest that started an hour and 15 minutes late due to severe weather.

Fifth-place New England (7-5-8, 29 points) edged to within three points of fourth-place Orlando in the Eastern Conference with the result. It also kept alive the possibility of clinching a postseason place by the end of the weekend, depending on other results around the league.

Carles Gil entered the match in the 63rd minute for the Revolution, marking his return from a foot injury that had sidelined him since July.

Nashville (6-6-7, 25 points), moved even on points with the seventh-place New York Red Bulls but remained in eighth on the first tiebreaker with one fewer win. It has lost just twice in its last 13 games and is on a three-match unbeaten run.

Zimmerman’s goal was his third of the season and came on Nashville’s fifth corner of the contest, after defender Andrew Farrell and goalkeeper Matt Turner combined to prevent a goal on the fourth just moments prior.

On the fifth corner, Zimmerman beat two Revs markers to send an authoritative header between Turner and the near post.

Buksa’s individual brilliance tied the game only three minutes later, however. The Polish striker took a pass from Kekuta Manneh just beyond the penalty arc and originally tried to line up a shot on his stronger left foot.

Shaded by multiple defenders, he instead took another touch to put it back on his right, then unleashed a dipping, low drive that beat Joe Willis inside the left post.
