Summertime visit from Santa

It’s summertime! How about a visit — from Santa? Why not! His ho-ho-ho is just as nice in the sweltering heat — and he’s visiting Hillcrest shopping centre this weekend!

There’s also a fabulous pizza party at Ontario place and one of the city’s best-kept food secrets that I know you’re going to enjoy.

All this — and shopping!

Delightful surprises at Baker and Scone on St. Clair Ave. W.

BAKER AND SCONE

I have driven by this delightful shop many times over the years, yet never had a chance to pop in (parking being an issue). One day a parking spot magically opened up, allowing me to enjoy one of the most wonderful food spots ever. Baker and Scone offers up a wonderful and delicious variety of sweet and savoury goods — scones being best sellers. In fact, the selection is staggering and includes such delights as lemon and black currant, fresh blueberry vanilla and a buttermilk double vanilla. Savouries included white cheddar with dill and chives and a sundried tomato and scallion, to name a few. Apart from taking the goodies home, you can also enjoy a delicious breakfast or lunch in the cafe part of the store. I purchased a variety of savouries and a few sweet ones — including a gluten-free scone for a friend’s son. I loved the variety of brightly-iced cookies plus there was yogurt available, and yogurt toppings and so much more. The lunch menu looked superb, so I’m definitely heading back to stay a while and enjoy a fine repast. There’s also catering and delivery. Baker and Scone may be the city’s best-kept secret – lovely staff with something for everyone.

— Baker and Scone, 693 St. Clair Ave. W. (at Christie St.), 416 657-2663; Monday-Tuesday, 8 a.m., to 1 p.m., Wednesday to Sunday, 8 a.m., to 4 p.m. For more information visit Bakerandscone.com.

A SLICE OF NICE IN THE CITY

One of the cheesiest festivals of the summer starts tomorrow at Ontario Place. You’ll also have the opportunity to enjoy pizza-making classes from the pros, live music, wine samplings and a taste of Southern Italy in a limoncello cocktail, aperol spritz or Birra Moretti. Truly a taste of La Dolce Vita! Check the website for more info, as well as ticket prices.

SANTA IN THE SUMMER

Heat getting you down? Watching all those Hallmark Christmas movies on TV? Counting down the days to putting up your tree? You can do all that and you can also head out to Hillcrest in Richmond Hill where a surprise visit from Santa is being planned. Santa is visiting Hillcrest and will be casually roaming around taking photos with unsuspecting kids and giving away Hillcrest Honey — honey produced right there on the roof of the mall, where a cluster of hives are busy creating this delicious honey. It’s also home to the new queen — Bee-yonce!

Santa — aka Bob King, one of the finest Santas in the city — will be semi-incognito, dressed in shorts, a t-shirt, holiday vest, red hat and his signature white beard. He’ll also be sharing what’s coming up this holiday season. We’re sure just talking to Santa will help you with the recent hot spell we’re currently under! Santa will be at Hillcrest on both Saturday, July 20 and Sunday, July 21 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.Santa will be at Hillcrest on both Saturday, July 20 and Sunday, July 21 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
