Toronto FC close to making some roster moves

Toronto FC general manager Ali Curtis said the club is in “active talks” with possible Designated Players.

That comment came in the wake of a move Curtis made on Tuesday afternoon. TFC traded an international roster spot to FC Dallas for the remainder of the 2021 season in exchange for $225,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM).

“(We’re) also in active discussions with potentially another non-DP player,” Curtis told the Toronto Sun. The GAM trade opens up cap space ahead of such a move.

The Reds still have one open DP spot open with the MLS regular season underway. TFC lost its opener, 4-2, to CF Montreal in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday and is scheduled to play host to the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday in Toronto’s ‘home opener’ at Exploria Stadium in Tampa.

The two current Designated Players on the roster (every MLS team is allowed three DPs) are Alejandro Pozuelo and Jozy Altidore.

“We do plan on adding (a DP) and we’ve honed in on a player that we’re very interested in right now,” TFC president Bill Manning told One Soccer on Monday.

The club has long targeted an “attacking player” who can score and create goals and someone, said Manning, who will buy into coach Chris Armas’ high-tempo, hard-press system.

“We’re excited about our prospects and we weren’t going to rush into this and get someone who wasn’t going to fit our system and someone that was not the player that we needed,” Manning told One Soccer. “We are going to add that attacking player and I think it’s just going to further strengthen the team.”

The Reds have been without four of their top starters in the club’s first three games thus far, including a two-match Concacaf Champions League Round-of-16 series win against Club Leon — Pozuelo (the 2020 MLS MVP), midfielder Jonathan Osorio, defender Chris Mavinga and forward Ayo Akinola. Veteran forward Altidore also missed the last two games after tweaking his hamstring in the first match against Leon on April 7. Manning said Osorio is back to full training and Akinola is “right there.” Pozuelo is said to have a thigh injury but there has been no word on the seriousness of the injury or when he could return.
