Toronto plays host to fast-growing world tech conference

A high-profile technology conference is expected to bring 25,000 people from around the world to Toronto.

Taking place in Toronto for the first time, the annual Collision Conference is a world-wide technology summit attracting entrepreneurs, innovators and CEOs from both established and emerging players in the tech industry.

“Right now feels like a special moment for Canada, and for Toronto,” said conference CEO and founder Paddy Cosgrave.

“There is such energy in the city, such an open, cosmopolitan and global atmosphere. Great companies are being started and incredible talent is coming out of University of Waterloo and University of Toronto and other institutions.”

Kicking off Monday with a keynote address by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and featuring a talk by Ontario Premier Doug Ford on Tuesday, the four-day conference will feature 730 speakers from a wide variety of backgrounds, including technology, entertainment, investment and government.

Wednesday’s speakers include Shopify founder and CEO Tobias Lutke, as well as a sit-down with three of the world’s leading venture capitalists to discuss where they’re putting their money over the next 12 months.

The conference is currently in its fifth year.

Collision was held in New Orleans for the past three years before the decision was made to move it to Toronto — an arrangement that’ll see the event hosted here for three years. The first conference was held in Las Vegas.

Collision runs until Thursday at the Enercare Centre at Exhibition Place.
