Vars cannabis company gets green light to produce starter plants

Vars-based apollogreen has received the Health Canada licences it needs to starting using industrial-scale tissue culture to produce millions of starter plants for cannabis growers, the firm announced Thursday.

The company will start work on a 5,000-square-foot facility and begin securing financing for a 70,000-square-foot building.

It’s “open for investment” with “one of the largest cannabis genetic catalogues in the world” totalling more than 350 varieties, the firm says in a release announcing that it has received licences for cultivation, processing and medical sales.

“What makes us different is that we are combining horticultural expertise with unique technology that will enable us to help cannabis companies reduce risks, save time, rapidly scale and protect brand quality,” CEO Tyler LeBlanc said in the release.

The company says it will “fuel the entire Canadian cannabis industry” by providing starter plants in industrial quantities so that producers — almost 200 have already been licensed — can save space and increase production and profit margins.

Tissue culture is used to produce millions of healthy, identical plants so that 200 starter plants can be produced in the space of a single “mother plant” used in traditional methods, apollogreen said.

Chief strategic officer Seann Poli, formerly of LiveWell Canada which was the first cannabis company granted permission by the city to grow in Ottawa, called apollogreen’s technology is a “game changer” for the cannabis industry.

As the industry matures, the price of raw cannabis will drop, he said, adding that “apollogreen is providing an immediate solution to helping producers increase revenue in their existing facilities to compensate for the pending decline in raw cannabis prices.
