‘Active shooter’ in Lewiston, Maine sees police swarm multiple locations with lockdown issued at schools & businesses

AN active shooter has been reported in Lewiston, Maine, with residents warned to stay inside and lock their doors as police investigate at multiple locations in the city.

Gunfire erupted at a bowling alley on Wednesday night before it spread into other parts of the town about 35 miles north of Portland.

"We ask people to shelter in place," Maine State Police said in a tweet.

"Please stay inside your home with the doors locked. Law enforcement is currently investigating at multiple locations.

"If you see any suspicious activity or individuals please call 911."

The Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office said it's investigating multiple active shooter events and that a suspect is still at large.

"We are encouraging all businesses to lock down and or close while we investigate," the department said in a Facebook post.

The department released a photo of the suspect, who is wearing a brown jacket, blue pants, and tan shoes. He has brown hair and a beard.

Anyone with information about the alleged shooter has been asked to send an email to dispatch@androscoggincountymaine.gov.

There was another shooting at Schemengees Bar & Grille Restaurant.

Lewiston Public Schools sent out a message urging people in its facilities to shelter in place, WMTW reported.

"We are going into lockdown," said the text.

"I will provide more information as it is available and appropriate."

Maine Governor Janet Mills also released a statement about the shooting.

"I am aware of and have been briefed on the active shooter situation in Lewiston," she said in a tweet.

"I urge all people in the area to follow the direction of State and local enforcement. I will to continue to monitor the situation and remain in close contact with public safety officials."

Members of the media have been asked to state at Lewiston City Hall.

The Lewiston Police Department, the Lewiston Fire Department, Maine State Police, and the Androscoggin County Sheriff's Department didn't immediately respond to The U.S. Sun's requests for comment.
