Airdrie Harriers coach recognised with service to sport award

An athletics coach who has given nearly 20 years’ service to the sport has been recognised.

Jim Glennie, of On the Run Cumbernauld and Airdrie Harriers, was awarded the jogscotland 20th Anniversary Achiever Award at the 4J scottishathletics and jogscotland annual awards in Glasgow at the end of last month.

Jim, 66, from Cumbernauld, has been running since the early 1980s, and a jog leader for more than a decade. He is also a committee member for Airdrie Harriers.

Initially leading a group with North Lanarkshire Leisure, Jim set up the independent On the Run Cumbernauld 10 years ago.

He said: “The award went down really well at On the Run Cumbernauld, everybody was really happy.

“I’m on the committee and I’m a member of Airdrie Harriers and got a lot of praise from them as well, which was nice, because they know I’ve been doing this for a long time.

“I’ve been running for 18 or 19 years for jogscotland, more or less since it began.

“I was a jog leader in Airdrie for five or six years in the early days, but I’ve been doing Cumbernauld for 18 or 19 years.

“I really enjoy it, it’s quite a social thing and you meet a lot of people.

“It’s good to bring people through, bring them on, and I just enjoy running.

“Everybody says it’s good for their mental health, and physical health as well, and it’s the best way to do it.”

Jo Stevens, a development officer for jogscotland, said: “Jim epitomises so many of the great things about jogscotland. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience which he gives generously to people of all abilities.

“His group celebrates the achievements of everyone from absolute beginners to marathon runners, and his modest, gentle encouragement helps people achieve more than they ever thought possible.

“We’re delighted to be able to recognise all that he’s given to the hundreds of runners that have met him over many years, and to say thank you for his tireless work.”
