Alex Scott’s father hits back at claims he ‘bullied and abused’ her after she breaks down in tears on This Morning

HAVING HIS SAY

ALEX Scott's estranged father has hit out after she claimed in her new memoir that he "bullied and abused" her.

The football pundit and former Strictly star has alleged that Tony Scott was "stupidly cruel" when she was a young child.

Alex, 37, claims Tony made her throw her toys away and that she and her brother would hear him "beating" her mother.

On Monday, Alex broke down in tears as she talked about her book to Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby on This Morning.

However, Alex's father Tony has now hit back and insisted he was a "strict" dad - but not a violent one.

Speaking to the MailOnline, he has vehemently denied her allegations and said: "I have no idea why she's saying all this stuff.

"I was raised in a strict but loving Jamaican family and Alex should know what they are like. I taught her discipline, I did a lot to help her."

He added that he was "never violent", saying: "I never beat Alex or anyone else in the family or did anything like that."

Alex's memoir, called How (Not) To Be Strong, details her rise to fame as a professional women's footballer.

She was eight years old when she was scouted by Arsenal.

In a podcast with Dragon's Den star Steven Bartlett, Alex cried as she recalled the "hardest night" of her childhood.

Alex told Steve in a video posted to his Youtube channel: "I'm in a room, listening to everything go on, just hoping she's alive.

"I heard everything, I heard her trying to run."

Alex has opened up about many other unknown parts of her life this week, including when she was racially abused and trolled online.

How you can get help

Women's Aid has this advice for victims and their families:

  • Always keep your phone nearby.
  • Get in touch with charities for help, including the Women’s Aid live chat helpline and services such as SupportLine.
  • If you are in danger, call 999.
  • Familiarise yourself with the Silent Solution, reporting abuse without speaking down the phone, instead dialing “55”.
  • Always keep some money on you, including change for a pay phone or bus fare.
  • If you suspect your partner is about to attack you, try to go to a lower-risk area of the house – for example, where there is a way out and access to a telephone.
  • Avoid the kitchen and garage, where there are likely to be knives or other weapons. Avoid rooms where you might become trapped, such as the bathroom, or where you might be shut into a cupboard or other small space.

If you are a victim of domestic abuse, SupportLine is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6pm to 8pm on 01708 765200. The charity’s email support service is open weekdays and weekends during the crisis – messageinfo@supportline.org.uk.

Women’s Aid provides a live chat service - available weekdays from 8am-6pm and weekends 10am-6pm.

You can also call the freephone 24-hour National Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0808 2000 247.

She also fought back tears on The One Show as she recalled hitting rock bottom during an alcohol battle.

Alex also spoke about her love life, and how she had been in a secret relationship with her fellow Lioness star Kelly Smith - and a disaterous date she went on with Coronation Street's Sam Robertson.
